What does this do?  This is the internals to an automata (well, a modified LEGO version).  The shock absorber is attached to frame and the moving arm.  The moving arm can be pushed down and it moves the gears.  The moving arm is attached to a gear that moves the rest of the gears.  The shock absorber pushes the moving arm back in the original position after being pressed, it goes back up.  Essentially, if weight is placed on the moving arm, it turns the gears one way, then when the weight is taken off, the arm goes up and the gears go the other way.  What could you use this for?  Do you know what Japanese automata this would be related to?
